Imagine: You came up with a super-funny Instagram post for your business that you know should have received way more attention and likes than it did. Your photo was perfect, your caption was clever and witty, and the two hashtags you used were great – so what gives? Welcome to what we call Hashtag 101 (#101, respectively.)
Hashtags have become extremely common across social media platforms, especially on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. According to SproutSocial.com, three-quarters of social media users are using hashtags with their posts. This, of course, includes businesses. The question is, how many hashtags are you using per post? The number should vary depending on which social media platform you are using. Below, we break down proper hashtag use on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter:
Facebook: This chart from SproutSocial.com shows the number of hashtags vs. average engagement per post on Facebook. According to our research and what we have tested, we also agree that using 1-2 hashtags per Facebook post is best to keep engagement up.
Instagram: Did you know? Instagram posts with hashtags saw a 70 percent increase in likes compared with posts that did not use any hashtags. We suggest using around 15 hashtags to help boost post engagement. According to Instagram expert Jenn Herman, half of your hashtags should be trending; half should be industry-related and moderately popular and a few should be more unique and content-specific.
Twitter: Tweets with hashtags receive two times the engagement than those without hashtags. To avoid being spammy (and to help stick to that character limit!), we suggest using 1-2 hashtags per tweet.
We hope this quick dive into the world of hashtags helped to show how important the use of hashtags is across social media. Who would have thought that a simple pound sign could help boost engagement and therefore increase brand visibility? We think it is pretty #awesome.
